Awareness Through Movement® Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) consists of verbally directed, gentle exercise lessons involving sophisticated movement sequences. Using guided attention, ATM allows students to become aware of habits and shows them the possibility for change. The lessons draw on natural intelligence in a gentle and pleasurable way. ATM accesses the sensory motor processes of the brain and involves attention, perception, imagination, and cognition. Primarily presented to groups, ATM lessons last from 30 to 60 minutes. The lessons start with comfortable, easy movements, then gradually evolve into movements of greater range and complexity. ATM helps students increase their awareness of how they move. By doing so, students learn to abandon habitual patterns of movement and develop new alternatives, resulting in increased flexibility and coordination. Many of the movements that are explored during ATM classes are based on ordinary activities, such as reaching, standing, and moving from lying to sitting. Other movements are based on explorations of the relationships of joints, muscles, and postures. |
